March Woody’s Hot Shot prize to Texas SportMod
SPRINGTOWN, Texas – Brad Shirley got his Smiley’s Racing Chassis Southern SportMod start in a car he swapped for. A new ride landed him the Woody’s Hot Shot of the Month award for March. He’ll receive a prize package of custom T-shirts and decals. From Springtown, Texas, Shirley began racing in the mini-stock class and won a track title at Boyd Raceway before getting the opportunity to move up to the sanctioned division four years ago. “I knew a guy who had a Southern SportMod and he wanted my mini-stock,” Shirley explained. “I figured if I was going to get out of the mini-stocks and into a SportMod, the time was good.” “The SportMods are a super competitive class,” he continued. “They’ve been an enlightening experience for me. One of the things I like most about these cars is that you can only do so much with them, so I know when I get to the track what I’m running against.”
A regular on Fridays at Boyd and Saturdays at Kennedale Speedway Park, Shirley plans to follow the new Texas Lone Star Series this season. He started 2011 with seven career wins in the class, including four last season, and hopes an emphasis on maintenance results in equal or exceeded success.
“Every Thursday is nuts and bolts night. We touch every nut and bolt on the car,” said Shirley, now behind the wheel of a new Vato car. “These races are tough enough to win that we don’t squander any chances. We might have breakage or .at tires but typically maintenance is not an issue.”
In addition to his wife Missy, Shirley’s crew includes father-in-law Greg Kirk, brother-in-law Mike Kirk and Al Micklar. Their mutual attention to detail has already paid off with the opening night win at Boyd and the Texas Lone Star Series checkers at 281 Speedway. Owners of Extreme Graphics in Springtown, the Shirleys did the graphics work on Brad’s car and deserves a pat on the back for helping land the Hot Shot prize. He’s also sponsored by Kirk’s Auto Care, Rocking W Reel Recovery Cattle & Hot Shot, Lube Center, R & E Construction, Debbie’s Racin’ Pics, Hilltop Family Church and REI Electric, all of Springtown; Wes’ Racing Engines of Fort Worth; Racin’ With Neal of Azle; Gears Plus of Joshua; JBS Motorsports of Decatur; Vato Racing Chassis of Forney; KR Motorsports of Mesquite; and Component Solutions of Mineral Wells.
